Swedish massage is the style most people picture when they think of massage. You lie on a table, usually under a sheet or towel, while the therapist uses oil or lotion and a flowing sequence of long, gliding strokes, kneading and circular movements.
The long strokes follow blood returning toward the heart, which is believed to improve circulation and help the muscles release tension. The rhythm is steady and predictable, which is part of why it feels so calming.
Expect gentle to medium pressure that you can adjust at any time. Many people drift toward sleep. It is rarely painful, and there is no need to "tough out" anything.
Sessions run 60 to 90 minutes and cover the back, neck, shoulders, arms and legs. Tell the therapist your preferred pressure and any areas to focus on or avoid.
